Zandvlei Trust A pod of about 200 Greater Flamingos at one of the pans at Strandfontein. The False Bay Ecology Park (FBEP) comprises the Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve and surrounding land, the Cape Flats Wastewater Treatment Works, the Coastal Park landfill site and a coastal strip - effectively an area from Sunrise Circle to Strandfontein. The Cape Flats Development Association (CAFDA), to the north of Rondevlei is integral to achieving the FBEP vision and objectives. The vision is that this should become one of the leading centres of conservation, environmental education and eco-tourism in the country and the key objectives are to conserve and enhance biodiversity to provide and promote environmental education, to create job opportunities. A Provisional Steering Committee, with representation from both government and civil society, has been established to take the FBEP forward and preparatory work is being undertaken in terms of the developing plans of action for implementation of projects and programmes on the ground. One of the biggest threats to the realisation of the Park as envisaged in the Development and Action Plan, is the proposed R300 Toll Road, sector alignment, which will effectively bisect the area. This will severely compromise the integrity of the Park and significantly impact on the opportunities and benefits presented by the project. The concerns of the Provisional Steering Committee regarding the road alignment have been documented and provided to the Environmental Consultants responsible for the Environmental Impact Assessment.
