Zandvlei Inventory and Monitoring Programme   (ZIMP)

History  Have you got any photos or documented history of the Muizenberg / Lakeside / Retreat areas.  It is important we record the oral stories of our area what people remember from the old days.

We need a champion to record these important events / stories / urban legends.

The oldest domestic residencial building in South Africa built in 1673, in the Main Road, Muizenberg, known as De Post Huys.

It was built as a watch house over looking False Bay, when the Netherlands controlled the colony and was at war with France and England. The Dutch East India Company set up signalling and defence posts around the south western tip of Africa.

Oral history

Larramie Damstra is recording the history of Lakeside, as an interest. Tel  021 788 1418.

These oral interviews are done with the intention of gathering a collective image of life in Lakeside, as remembered by ordinary members of the community.
The interviews are written in the spirit of Walter Benjamin’s caution that: "every image of the past that is not recognised by the present as one of its own concerns threatens to disappear irretrievably".
