ZIMP – Litter net in Sand River 23/05/2007

A Community initiative, working with the City of Cape Town.

Do you have 1/2 an hour per week to supervise and monitor the removal of the litter?

On the 23rd May 2007 Peter Joubert, Bowen Boshier, Russell, Willem, Daniel Boshier and Gavin Lawson repositioned another net 100 meters east of the concrete pier, leaving the original net spanned with the steel rope in place.

Double net removed to leave original in place.          A new net 100 meters east of orignal.

Thanks to MCM who made the net available to fit the cannel width. We had to reattach  the floats on the net and hammer in stakes on both sides of the canal to attach the top rope.
We now have 3 nets in place about 200 meters apart. All different in design. We will access which works best.
The nets are weighted with bricks to allow about a meter clearance underneath for fish, animals and birds to pass the net obstacle during high flow conditions. The net can rise an fall with the water level, aided by the floats.

wall of the canal.

We had to put additional floats on this net and remove some of the chain weights at the bottom. We also  added brick anchors to allow space underneath for the faunal movement.
This net operates with the pulley system.

Appeal for help
The regular monitoring and clearing of litter from the net is an ongoing issue. It requires constant clearing, bagging and removal to the refuse dump site which City officals and their contractors fail to do for a variety of reasons.

Do you live close by and have 1/2 an hour per week to supervise and monitor the removal of the litter?
