ZIMP – Litter net in Sand River 18/05/2007

A Community initiative, working with the City of Cape Town.

Do you have 1/2 an hour per week to supervise and monitor the removal of the litter?

On the 18th May 2007 Peter Joubert, Bowen Boshier and Gavin Lawson installed another net at the corner of the Sand River canal just off Mullet Close in the Marina. Thanks again MCM who donated the surplus netting to fit the cannel width.

Peter Joubert and Bowen Boshier fastening the top   Bowen anchouring the one end to the metal stake
rope to the net.                                                       driven into the ground more than a meter deep.

Finished the job the net can be pulled to the side      Almost dark as we finish installing the net.
of the cannel with the top rope.

The metal stake driven into the ground and double anchoured to a post. The pulley system allows the net to be operated from the one bank and returned into place once it has been cleared.

Appeal for help
The regular monitoring and clearing of litter from the net is an ongoing issue. It requires constant clearing, bagging and removal to the refuse dump site which City officals fail to do for a variety of reasons.

The effort required is to make sure the litter does not enter at one of the the sources of Zandvlei and will help reduce the litter impact.
