Background information

The recently passed Integrated Coastal Management Act (2008) requires all estuaries to have a management plan.
In support of this, the CAPE Estuaries Programme, through CapeNature have identified a number of priority estuaries within the Cape Floristic Region and over the past few years have been facilitating the development of such plans.
Zandvlei has recently been included into this list of priority estuaries and the development of a management plan for it is being supported by CapeNature and the City of Cape Town in collaboration with other relevant authorities.

The intention is to involve all relevant stakeholders in the process of developing the management plan, and an invitation is therefore hereby extended to all interested members of the public to attend a meeting / workshop on Monday, 19 July, 2010.

The purpose of the meeting is to:

• Share information about the CAPE Estuaries Programme and the process of preparing an Estuary Management Plan (EMP);
• Present available information on the current status of the estuary and management initiatives, and agree on a preliminary list of issues that need to be addressed in the EMP;
• Develop a vision for Zandvlei; and
• Discuss the establishment of a representative Forum and Technical Working Groups to take the process forward.
