CAPE Estuaries Programme: Development of an Estuary Management Plan (EMP) for Zandvlei Estuary, Muizenberg, Cape Town

1. TOR Hydrodynamics WG

a) To review current management measures and propose changes/ additions/ alternatives which will facilitate the achievement of the relevant Management Objective:

To develop a mechanism to manage the hydrodynamics of the estuary in a manner which:

  • does not compromise its biological integrity;

  • maintains salinity at optimal levels for healthy estuarine functioning;

  • enhances the role of the estuary as a nursery for marine migrants;

  • maintains the competitive advantage of pondweed over phytoplankton;

  • promotes flushing for water quality improvement;

  • reduces siltation;

  • optimises water depth fluctuations for healthy estuarine functioning while minimising flood risk and damage to shoreline properties and meeting recreational needs; and

  • takes account of the potential impacts of sea-level rise.

b) To develop Operational Objectives/ Indicators and an associated Monitoring Programme to assess the effectiveness of the management measures.

c) To identify information gaps and studies which may need to be undertaken in order to give effect to the objectives.
