Zandvlei Trust

Constitution – proposed changes – 24/11/2004

At the Members meeting in the Imperial Yacht Club, a quorum was not achieved by attendance. The record shows 9 members attended, with proxies for 15 others. The attendance is as per the register.

The Chairman Vincent Marincowitz, asked for any discussion and or changes to the proposed revision posted to all members for review. As no comments were received and or changes added, the next step is to finalise the acceptance by postal vote, as explained in the previous covering letter.

A discussion, on the just received City of Cape Town's Water Quality Report, in and around False Bay and the Zandvlei Catchment was introduced by the Chairman.

Jeff Petty a member and local treknet fisherman gave us an insight of what the "fish spotters" see from up on their mountainside vantage lookouts. They can see fish shoals, shark and seal movements from Sunrise Circle to Surfers Corner and beyond Baileys Cottage down to St James. They are equiped with binoculars and two way radios and often warn the surf lifeguards on the beach at Muizenberg to get the people out of the water when sharks are nearby.  A short discussion centred around the recent local shark attacks and what should be done.

All agreed, education of the water users is very important. The conditions regarded as safe to swim, need to be publicised as much as possible, to educate visitors and local beach users.

Consensus, that people should be more afraid of motor vehicles and their drivers, than sharks. Statistically drivers are responsible for more injury and deaths in one day on our local roads, than sharks in the national local waters in 20 years or more.

After tea and coffee the meeting was closed at 21h15.
