AGM on 23 May 2007, with the Source – to – Sea presentation.

Thirty nine members, braved the cold night to attend the annual proceedings of reports and elections for the new Exco, also to hear about the wonderful Source - to - Sea project.

Part of the audience                                                   Mandy's presentation.

Mandy Nofke gave us a well received presentation with many questions and interest shown in the project. She is part of the Working for Wetlands team, working to rehabilitate the Prinskasteel River which runs through the Tokai plantations. This is an accepted model project, as it has expert studies and inputs and is well documented. It is a GIS type study with short and longterm goals which can be achieved when and how funding becomes available to implement the different phases of the plan.

The lower Prinskasteel River course, which originates at Elephants Eye cave on Constantiaberg, was altered to accomodate the planations requirements causing large scale errosion in areas which have become infested with invassive trees and plants degrading the area.

The river water courses have to be altered and realigned with their original courses to included wetlands to improve the water quality out flow. Mandy showed photos which demonstrated the workings of the project with the heavy winter rains which fell last weekend. The system is well tested and survived the storms.

The Friends of Tokai have been instrumental in having areas of the Cape Sandplain Fynbos and Granite Fynbos in the Tokai plantation rehabliitated. These are the only known remaining areas of this soil and vegetation type on the Cape Flats.

As Mandy explained, this is a project that will go beyond our present children and grandchildrens life times.

We support this very ambitious undertaking which we hope becomes a reality in the future with the same dedication as the present people who planned and are working to implement it.
