Arbour Day – 16 June 2006 (National Youth Day holiday)
We celebrate National Arbour Day now, as the winter rains help establish the plants before the long hot dry and windy summer set in. The south western part of the Cape is a winter rainfall area.
This morning was cold with a fog coming in from the sea, and thanks to the combined effort of about 35 Members, friends, local residents and the Zandvlei Nature Reserve staff who came to help over a hundred "youthful plants" grow. Thank you to the Nature Reserve staff - Farrah and her Team for transporting the plants to Wildwood and Park Islands.
The enthusiastic group made short work of getting the plants into the predug holes on Wildwood Island with 26 Milkwood trees going in. 20 of these Milkwoods were purchased by Cherry Giljam and she is requesting a donation to recover the costs.
This was the first time Zandvlei Trust or its members have planted on Wildwood Island, much to the local residents delight.
The plants were donated by Working for Wetlands, Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Zandvlei Nature Reserve and some were bought from the Hout Bay Nursery.
Thank you and well done to all invovlved.
