Education on the Mountain (Extract article from the volume 2007/4 Newsletter) Photographs by Sharon McCallum
Going up the mountain via Pecks Valley Studying the contents of the mountain stream Muizenberg mountain in spring was the classroom for 16 Grade 6 learners, and their teacher Glenda Sammuels, from Steenberg Primary School. They were taken on an environmental education programme hike from Peck's Valley up to the summit from where they got an eagle's eye view of their neighbourhoods relationship with Zandvlei. One of the children from Capricorn remarked that he had never noticed the mountain before.
Over looking Muizenberg Waiting on Boyes Drive to go swimming One of the exercises on the outing enabled the children to sieve water from mountain streams so they could identify the vegetation and other particles carried down from the mountains into the vlei. The hike was lead by Zandvlei Nature Reserve's Environmental Education Centre, Manager Mark Arendse and Zandvlei Trust Executive Committee member Sharon McCallum.
