Peninsula Paddle Expedition on 5th June 2011 - World Environment Day.

Kenilworth in the Kromboom canal to the Vygieskraal and Black Rivers.

Up on the right hand bank Catherine Ritchie has      Sam is off at a trot, Errol waving goodbye to his wife.
been telling the curious onlookers what was going
on. I saw some shakes of the head and concerned
faces for these "mad people" in the river.
Karen has riden her bicycle home, to fetch her car so
she can cover the rest of the journey.

The ever smiling Sam she was enjoying herself.              Dick ready to go again.

Sharon Bosma (WESSA) watching Kevin take a water sample before the party set off.

Ian the last one in.

Along the M5 freeway travelling south one may see this house about 70 meters from the road. Some interesting graffiti decorates its facing wall.  Are these the "dreaded lurgies" which hang out in the river below?

It was a difficult light to illustrate the height of litter caught up in the trees along the bank (red and blue plastic mid photo). This is less than 20 metres from the edge of the M5 freeway.

While waiting for the paddlers to appear, this Egyptian Goose egg was seen and Helmeted Guineafowl eggs were nearby as well. An unidentified raptor was in the trees above watching the proceedings.

Would you believe this scene is less the 50 metres from the edge of the M5 freeway.

Same place.

Alistair peering into the deep pool in front of him.

Christopher manouvering around a submerged rock in the deep pool.

This resident peered over his fence to see what on earth was going on.

The Paddlers explaining to him what it was about.    Christopher into the canal section again.
With a challenge for him to join in next year, this
was suitably declined.

This road sign gives a clue to where we are. It is the Kromboom Road turnoff when travelling south on the M5 near Rondebosch and Athlone.

More graffiti and Table Mountain in the background.

Dick commented that this was like a route march from the army days.

Sam still going strong.

Glen had put his very long river canoe on the car at Kenilworth as it would not have been
comfortable to carry it through this section. So he chose to walk along.

The seconds and additional paddlers waiting at Sybrand Park.

This is Klipfontein Road in the foreground and the elevated M5 behind.
We are now in line with Devils Peak. Table Mountaian behind.

More graffiti on a wall next to Klipfontein Road in Sybrand Park.

The Garlandale Pump station in Klipfontein Road.

These 2 guys were taken by surprise when the paddlers arrived. They are now in the Black River.
A little further back, the Kromboom and Black Rivers merged into the Black.

Some good natured banter followed.

To remind us beauty can be found anywhere. These Oxalis purpurea are growing on the middle island of Klipfontein Road. There is a large spread of them.

This is the "gloves on" bit, also face masks. The Vygieskraal River is about 500 metres away.

Christopher changing his gloves.

Two more paddlers joined in here, Glen on his SUP board and Paul Lutz in the kayak.

This is the same lady who was on the SUP board at Princessvlei
with this message stuck to her front.
