Zandvlei Trust Peninsula Paddle Expedition on 5th June 2011 - World Environment Day. Princessvlei canal through Southfield to Plumstead. Leaving Princessvlei at its north east reach into a canal which heads off in the direction of Southfield. This
is some more graffiti we will see along the way, on a back wall near the DeWaal
Road intersection off the M5. Here they come it is a walking section Glen Truan leading the way. The sun is out and it is warming up. Heading towards the bridges on De Waal Road which is just off the M5 Southfield intersection. These children could not believe what they were seeing. They were running around all excited by the activity. Then jump into the car and zoom off the M5 into the service road off Dick Burton Road in Plumstead. The seconds were already there with the bicycles and waiting to load up the canoes to take them to Kenilworth. This is the M5 railway bridge over the Cape Flats line at Plumstead, Southfield and Fairways. There is a serious dumping issue, with the Metrorail fencing stolen / removed. A number of children have been knocked down by the suburban trains as the track has blind approaches on both sides of the bridge. On a windy day one would not hear or see an approaching train. Dumping and burning of tyres for the metal takes place here. Looking east towards Fairways. This is the end of the open canal. It goes under ground in Plumstead. The railway line seen behind.
Sam and Alistair still looking fresh. Kevin arriving. Errol, Ian, Christopher and Dick looking forward to the next shift to Kenilworth.
