Zandvlei Trust

Peninsula Paddle Expedition on 5th June 2011 - World Environment Day.

The Sand River canal through Retreat to Princessvlei.

Out of Zandvlei and into the Sand River canal next to the Zandvlei Nature Reserve.
Devils Peak is in the distance.

A short portage as they did not want to climb over the litter nets. Glen Truran at the back and
Christopher Norman in front of him with the yellow canoe.

The pirates of Zandvlei. It is some secret code you know. Guy Bubb and Glen Thompson.

Alistair on the right is exhaling warm air into the cold morning, the metal litter trap which was holding some water back so they would be able to paddle on the other side. Dick Chrley lifting his canoe out. Karen being helped by Christopher.

They are getting out on the flood plain section of the trap.

Sam Braid was back in first. She is regarded as a "hardcore water babe".

Under the Coniston Road bridge and dodging the submerged shopping trolley in the canal.

Christopher Norman, Karen and Errol Smith going around the trolley.

Heading towards Military Road.

Dick Chrley and Ian Tilley skirting past the trolley.

Some graffity along Prince George Drive and the canal.

A rainbow appeared, always a good sign and pretty to see. It was the first of a few during the morning.

Catherine Ritchie explaining to the children, some who are camera shy, what is happening in the canal.

Here they come, and cars have stopped and their occupants have come to see what the Peninsula Paddlers are doing.

Karen has found a kettle.

This corner proved to be an interesting stop as the SABC News cameraman was filming part of the event and some locals were haming it up for the camera.

Kevin stopped to explain that he was taking samples of water in marked tubes for analysis.

Kevin logging the co ordinates on the GPS.

When the water gets too shallow the SUP guys have to carry.

The SAP patrols came to investigate and escort the group through Retreat. They were interested in the reasons why we were doing this expedition. This is at the Sonata Street bridge, looking towards Constantiaberg.

Two very enterprising gents Raphael and Quintin planted this garden next to the canal at Volksang Street bridge. We encouraged them to ask their neighbours to carry it on down along the canal.
The SABC cameraman Trevor interviewed them.

Stopping for the cameraman at Volksang Street bridge.

Off again towards Retreat Road, Glen Truran at the rear with the orange canoe.

These curious Helmeted Guineafowl were overlooking the canal and in search of their breakfast.

Heading towards Leytonstone Road bridge.

Errol is towing Karens canoe.

Devils Peak is getting closer and Princessvlei is just ahead. The towers are
at is the Princessvlei Eco Adventure Centre on the left.
