Zandvlei Trust
AGM – 2nd
June 2004
Part of the audience at the Imperial Yacht Club at Zandvlei.
Susanne Ditkke, a Consultant and authority on Waste Management, gave the
audience something to think about.
She explained how quickly the "modern consumer world" has developed
in relation to the "natural world."
The chemical, marketing and
manufacturing industries, together with the retail sellers create the products
we buy and consume. The amount of waste generated to produce the goods with the
packaging is staggering.
She recommends that the consumer must negotiate and interact with the retail
managers to sell responsibly packaged and manufactured goods. This to reduce the
amount of waste materials which have to be compacted in the landfill
sites.
The present landfill sites in Cape Town have a relatively short time span left,
less than 20 years. Cape Town presently fills 4 football fields, a meter deep,
on a daily basis with collected waste disposed by its citizens.
At the AGM the following Exco was elected for 2004 – 2005;
Vincent Marincowitz – Chairman
Gavin Lawson – Deputy Chairman
Lucia Rodrigues – Secretary
Henk Shreuders – Treasurer
Una Hartley – Exco member
Ludine Lee-Wright – Exco member
A short review of the proposed R300 Toll Road was held with explanations of
what has happened to date and feedback from the protest we held on the 8th May
2004 at Lakeside. There were posters and press cuttings on display, while we
enjoyed the refreshments afterwards.
